Mark Zuckerberg is teaming up with Bono’s One organization to push for universal Internet access by 2020. The “Connectivity Declaration” released by One, and signed by several high-profile people, was released as the United Nations its Global Goals, a development blueprint aimed at solving pressing social and economic challenges. Zuckerberg pointed to farmers in Africa who use the mobile Web to track inventory and prices, women in South America who use phones to get health information, and refugees who use smartphones to stay in touch with family during their journey to Europe. He didn’t point out potential Facebook accounts, go figure. A new UN report on global access to broadband finds that 57 percent of the world, or 4 billion people, remains unconnected. In developing countries, only about 35 percent of people have Internet access.

With world leaders heading to the United Nations in NYC for the General Assembly, it does present the occasion for some one-on-one discussions. And as the White House made clear, at the request of Russian President Putin, he and President Obama will do just that on Monday, with Topics A being the Ukraine, but there is also that matter of Russia’s increased military presence in Syria. Obama hasn’t seen much reason to meet with Putin, unless the Russian leader seems open to change his handling of these matters, so this meeting request may be a sign that the door is opening. We should know soon enough. And Capitol Hill is till reverberating from House Speaker Boehner’s announcement that he’s leaving Washington at the end of October.

Pope Francis urged hundreds of thousands of the faithful gathered Sunday for the biggest event of his U.S. visit to be open to “miracles of love,” closing out his joyful six-day trip with a message of hope for families, consolation for victims of child sexual abuse and a warning to America’s bishops. The wide Benjamin Franklin Parkway overflowed with the jubilant, who stood in line for hours and endured airport-style security checks to see history’s first pope from the Americas celebrate an open-air Mass in the birthplace of the United States.
