Doc: Smoking pot may cause ‘man boobs’

It seems more men are developing breasts – or “moobs” – short for man boobs, than ever before.

In a piece posted on CNN.com Thursday, Detroit-based plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn describes the increase in male patients seeking treatment for the development.

Youn told CNN he often gives patients a simple piece of advice: put down the pipe. Or the bong.

That’s because, as Youn writes, several animal studies have found a link between an ingredient in marijuana and an increase in estrogen, the hormone blamed for gynecomastia – the male development of breasts. Youn says that while most cases of gynecomastia resolve themselves on their own, the condition could be related to an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen, and that imbalance could be aggravated by marijuana use.
