Top holiday toys are anyone’s guess

Top holiday toys are anyone’s guess

What toys will be on children’s wish lists this holiday season? Retailers have their own best guesses.

It really comes down to what kids like — but the people who stock store shelves for the holiday season can’t wait for them to decide. So they come up with their own lists of toys they think will be popular.

Lists compiled by Walmart, Kmart and Toys R Us all include an Elmo that gives out hugs, Barbie’s Dream House and a new robotic Furby.

Walmart tried something new when coming up with its hot toy list this year: It asked kids to pick them. About 1,000 boys and girls spent a three-day weekend in August playing with toys. Their choices resulted in a Top 20 list of kid-approved toys, which Walmart is featuring prominently in its stores and online.

Toys based on TV shows were popular with the focus-group kids, including a Sofia the First talking doll and a Doc McStuffins Get Better Check Up Center, along with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Secret Sewer Lair Playset.

This year, Target is adding electronics, video games and sporting goods to its top toy list for the first time. Several are Target exclusives, including LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer Disney Princess Bundle and a Razor Lighted Wheel-A-Scooter.

The Toys R Us list of the top 15 toys is split nearly evenly between exclusive items and those available everywhere.

Kmart exclusives include Kenmore wooden kitchen sets and toy Craftsman power tools.

Older kids may be interested in the newest versions of the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox video game consoles, launched just in time for the holidays.
