A second fire happening just a day after the first at an Augusta landfill. Firefighters returned to the Hatch Hill Solid Waste Landfill early Sunday morning.

Augusta Fire Battalion Chief Jason Farris says the fire was put out and fire crews left the scene by 8:00 a.m. crews from Augusta Public Works remained on the scene to monitor the area. The burned trash was still emitting steam, so they attempted to smother the remains with dirt.

Authorities say Sunday’s fire was in a different area of the landfill than the section that caught fire early Saturday morning. Saturday’s fire took seven different fire departments to put out. No injuries were reported in either incident and the forest service is now investigating how the fires might have started.
