Substation Failure Leads 28,000 to Lose Power in Cumberland Co.

Electricity is fully restored after 28,000 customers in Cumberland County were in the dark Friday night from an equipment failure.

Central Maine Power says one of its substations in Yarmouth experienced a failure, with outages being reported across 10 towns – Brunswick, Cumberland, Windham, Falmouth, Durham, Freeport, Gray, New Gloucester, Yarmouth and Raymond.

CMP says its crews switched to an alternate power source to restore power to more than 13,000 customers in less than two minutes, while the remaining homes were put back online in under an hour-and-a-half.

Yarmouth Fire-Rescue says an electrical short at a substation on West Elm Street, resulted in a small fire, leading to the wide area power outage.

CMP says it’s proposed replacing the substation because of its age.
