Veterans Plaza End of Summer Shindig

We speak with American Legion Post #20 Commander and Veterans Plaza Committee Chair, David Watson.

The Veterans Plaza on Brunswick’s Downtown Mall was formally dedicated as part of the 200th Anniversary of the State of Maine, on Veterans Day 2020 in a COVID-19 limited virtual ceremony format.

The Veterans Plaza committee recently announced that an on-site celebration of the Veterans Plaza will take place this coming Saturday, August 28th from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

The afternoon will include a large gathering of exhibitors representing over 40 veteran’s organizations, a musical performance by the Volunteers Jazz Band, food vendors with tables and chairs under tenting for veterans and their families to socialize and interact.

The Veterans Plaza features 12 sentinels, each representing a major U.S. conflict, a Purple Heart Memorial, one of only two in Maine that is open to the public. Integrated throughout the Plaza are 435 individual granite Honor Blocks sponsored by family and friends of a veteran, each block noting the veteran’s service to the nation.

This one-of-a-kind Plaza project represents the culmination of a four-year effort of an evolving design, coupled with a fundraising campaign which has raised over $500,000 through support by veterans, civilians and other members of the community, fundraising events and the Town of Brunswick.
