New data shows only a fraction of nearly 200 people arrested during January’s immigration enforcement surge in Maine had criminal convictions.

The new release from the Deportation Data Project shows only a dozen people arrested in Maine had criminal records, while another two dozen had pending criminal charges.

The Deportation Data Project says it obtained its information through Freedom of Information Act requests.

The new data conflicts with the federal government’s claim that agents targeted the “worst of the worst” criminals during a five-day sweep of southern Maine.
