CAMDEN, Maine (AP) A fire that swept through a home in Camden sent four people to hospitals and left a fifth person dead.

Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley said the house was engulfed in flames and several occupants were outside when firefighters arrived early Thursday.

WMTW-TV reported that a neighbor was awakened to the sound of screams and saw a man with burn injuries. One victim was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland; the other three were taken to PenBay Medical Center in Rockport, officials said.

One person was unaccounted for after the fire, which destroyed the home and two vehicles parked outside. Officials say they were later found dead inside.

Firefighters from several towns assisted in dousing the flames.

Heavy equipment was being brought in to assist the state fire marshal’s office in the investigation.
