A major project affecting access on I-295 to and from the US Route 1  Veterans Memorial Bridge starts Monday.

The ramp from Veterans Memorial Bridge to southbound I-295 is reduced to a single lane with a 12-foot width restriction. The ramp to southbound US Route 1 from Veterans Memorial Bridge is closed, and traffic will be detoured to exit 3 on I-295.

The construction is meant to rehabilitate the Ramp Bridge over I-295 and improve access as well as ease traffic on Broadway through South Portland.

The project will last more than a year, into the fall of 2026, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

The contractor handling the $12.4 million project is Wyman & Simpson of Richmond.
