AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN) Public health officials confirmed Friday afternoon that a second person has tested presumptively positive for the Coronavirus in Maine.
The individual is a man in his 50s, who is from Cumberland County, according to Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah. The man is in self-isolation at home.
City Manager Jon Jennings said the man works at the India Street clinic in Portland, which will remain closed for 14 days. Twenty-three staff members and seven volunteers will be self-quarantined to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Results from tests on a third person, a woman in her 20s, had initially been considered a presumptive positive, but those results are now being reviewed.
The announcement comes one day after Gov. Janet Mills announced Maine’s first case of the virus, which involved a woman in her 50s who resides in Androscoggin County. That individual, who is a Navy reservist, is now self-isolating at home.
Here are simple steps you can take to reduce the possible spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses such as influenza and the common cold:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
- Stay home while you’re sick and avoid close contact with others
- Currently there is no vaccine available to prevent the spread of COVID-19
