NEWRY, Maine (AP)   Officials say one teenager has died and another was seriously injured after an afterhours sledding trip on a ski trail at Sunday River.

Deputies with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office say they responded to the Tempest Trail around 2 a.m.  The trail, which is steeper than most sledding hills, is partly rated a black diamond for expert skiers.  The other part is rated as blue for intermediate skiers.

Police say the two teens were on the same sled, which went off the trail and hit at tree.

Spokeswoman for Sunday River Darcy Lambert says sledding is not allowed on the ski trails and the teens were on the mountain when it was closed.

Police say an 18-year-old male was killed while a 17-year-old male was taken to a hospital.  Both teens are from New Hampshire, but police say they are not releasing their names at this time.

Police say their investigation is ongoing.
