Abbott Laboratories is increasing production of a popular over-the-counter rapid COVID-19 test.

The BinaxNOW tests are manufactured at Abbott facilities in Westbrook and Illinois.

The company says it plans to produce 70 million of the tests next month.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Abbott is currently producing more than 50 million tests per month.

The paper said the company did not answer questions about whether Abbott plans to hire additional workers in Maine or how many of the tests made next month will be manufactured in Maine.

It comes as demand for the tests rises and the federal government prepares to start distributing 500 million tests to Americans.
