AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine’s attorney general says officers acted in self-defense when they fatally shot a man who fired at an armored vehicle and warned he wanted to “kill a cop.”

Attorney General Aaron Frey on Friday says Sgt. Peter Michaud, Sgt. Joshua Haines and Trp. David Coflesky reasonably believed it was necessary to use deadly force to shoot 54-year-old Mark Ellis at his Orrington home June 7, 2017 to protect themselves and others from death or serious injury.

The shooting followed an 11-hour stand-off that included 76 phone calls and a PA system to communicate with Ellis.

Frey says Ellis in an earlier 911 call said he wanted to kill an officer who previously used pepper spray and Taser to overcome Ellis’ resistance.

Deputies learned Ellis had high-powered rifles in his home.
