ARMOUTH, Maine (AP) The state of Maine is going to receive more than $60 million from the federal government to replace bridges in different parts of the state.

Officials say the money will help pay for the replacement of eight bridges in southern, western and northern Maine. The U.S. Department of Transportation says the money was awarded through the Competitive Highway Bridge Grant Program and the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Grant Program.

One of the grants is an award of nearly $19 million for the I-295 Bridge Project that is replacing four structurally deficient bridges in Yarmouth and Freeport. The bridges carry some of the most traffic in the state.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins says the bridge work will “produce benefits that will be felt by Maine families and businesses throughout our state.”
