Asleep at Wheel Man Leads Portland Police on Chase, Crashes

A 21-year-old Portland man is facing numerous charges after police say he led them on a chase before crashing into a tree Wednesday morning.

Officers say they found Hamsa Omar of Portland asleep at the wheel in the middle of the road near the Walton Street train tracks at 4:10 am

Officers say, that after a brief conversation, Omar fled the scene at a high rate of speed and crashed the vehicle into a tree at 189 Ocean Avenue, before running away on foot.

They say they brought in a tracking dog from Falmouth that quickly led them directly to Omar, who was hiding behind a building at 205 Ocean Avenue.

Police say they found a handgun, 17 grams of cocaine, seven grams of fentanyl, several oxycontin pills and $5,753 in cash in his possession. Omar was then taken to the Cumberland County Jail.

He faces eight separate charges – Aggravated Trafficking of Scheduled Drugs, two counts of Unlawful Trafficking in Scheduled Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Scheduled Drug (W), Aggravated Criminal Mischief, Operating a Vehicle Without a License, Driving to Endanger and Failing to Stop for an Officer.

Portland Police thanked the Falmouth PD for their assistance with Omar’s apprehension.
