AUBURN, Maine (WGAN) Auburn Police say a local man was killed during a logging accident on Monday afternoon.

First responders were called to the Auburn Sand Pit on Gracelawn Road at 2:20pm. 57-year-old Thomas Staples of Oxford had been standing near a truck that logs were being loaded into. 42-year-old Ryan Kane was loading the truck when a log fell out of the cherry-picker, hitting Staples, who later died in the hospital.

Staples was a cousin of Kane’s and wasn’t an employee of Kane’s business, Ryan Kane Trucking and Custom Sawing. The incident will not be investigated as a workplace accident and OSHA will not be involved in the investigation.
