The city of Augusta is closely monitoring weather conditions and is warning residents that today’s storm may cause flooding.

The city is especially worried heavy rainfall, and snowmelt could cause an overflow from the Kennebec River. As a precaution, the North End of the Front Street in Augusta in closed.

There’s also concern in Augusta that high winds speeds may cause trees to fall on power lines or block roadways.

The city says it’s received numerous questions about this storm after heavy damage from a storm a year ago in mid-December. The city says the upcoming storm is not expected to reach the magnitude or severity of winds and flooding in the 2023 storm, but stresses it will be impactful, and is advising people to prepare a major event.

The city says it will update the public on any closures via e-notification and posted on the city’s website and social media platforms.

All Augusta schools are closed Wednesday after previously being scheduled for early release because of the storm.
