AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) City officials in Augusta, Maine, have opened up a street after closing it for two weeks due to flooding from the Kennebec River.
The Kennebec Journal reports the city reopened Front Street for the first time since closing it Jan. 13. Flooding in downtown Augusta and Hallowell was caused by thick ice jams on the river and heavy rain. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed ice breakers last week to alleviate congestion.
Lt. Matthew Odom, chief of the Waterways Management Division in northern New England, says crews will continue to evaluate the river conditions. Odom says icebreakers will break up ice downriver to continue improving river flow.
