Police identify victim, suspect in fatal stabbing at Fryeburg Fairgrounds

FRYEBURG, Maine (WGAN) Police say one person has been taken into custody in connection with a stabbing that left one man dead at the fairgrounds where the Fryeburg Fair takes place.

Police were called to the fairgrounds on Main Street in Fryeburg around 1 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a male who had been stabbed and was unresponsive. They arrived to find a man dead near the restrooms.

He’s been identified as 28-year-old Anderson Gomes of Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit responded, along with the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team.

Investigators were speaking to witnesses and identifying persons of interest, and were expected to remain at the fairgrounds into the evening on Wednesday. Around noon, they arrested 46-year-old Carlos Negron of Connecticut. He was taken to Oxford County Jail and charged with murder.

Police believe the two knew each other and say there’s no ongoing threat to public safety.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy in the coming days.
