BANGOR, Maine (WGAN) A 19-year-old father is facing charges after his infant son was found to have injuries consistent with abuse.

In early October, police in Bangor responded to a report of a baby with a skull fracture. The father, 19-year-old Damien Schenk, told them he had dropped the child, after the 17-year-old mother initially said she had accidentally bumped the boy’s head.

According to CBS 13, no charges were filed then, but police were called again weeks later when a doctor alerted them to a rib fracture that indicated a squeezing or shaking-related incident.

Schenk is now being held at Penobscot County Jail and is charged with assault on a child under the age of six, endangering the welfare of a child, and reckless conduct.

The baby is expected to recover and is now in the care of his mother with supervision from DHHS.

Schenk made his first court appearance on Thursday.
