Bangor police charge two people with murder in connection with Essex Street fire

BANGOR, Maine (WGAN) Bangor police have charged two people with murder in connection with the death of a man who was found unconscious while his residence burned.

Police on Wednesday said 59-year-old Berton Conley was found unconscious in his residence on Essex Street the morning of November 1st. A fire had broken out in the kitchen and filled the residence with smoke. Conley died after being rushed to the hospital.

The manner of death was determined to be homicide following an autopsy.

Following an investigation, police arrested 30-year-old Joseph Johnson of Old Town and 39-year-old Cote Choneska of Veazie and charged both with Intentional or Knowing Murder.

No furthers details were released. Police say the case is still under investigation.
