Police officers in Bangor are now getting equipped with body cameras.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the move is years in the making, with city councilors approving body cameras for all 84 officers in the department in October and discussing the issue several times over the last few years.

Part of the delay was due to the city needing time to develop a policy that would protect the privacy of citizens who are recorded on video. That policy went in place in 2019, but funding for the initiative was just approved last year.

Other department employees including plain-clothes detectives will not wear the cameras.
