Bates College in Lewiston had 16 students in isolation due to COVID-19 at one point this week.

That’s the largest number of students in isolation at the school at one time. The school had just one student in isolation last week.

According to the Sun Journal, two employees have also tested positive for the virus.

So far this semester, 40 students and five staff members have tested positive. That’s compared to 25 students and 19 staff members during the fall semester.

The newspaper says that the increase in cases comes after a warning from the school last week, in the wake of several reports of off-campus social gatherings where the school says those in attendance weren’t adhering to public health guidelines.
