Biddeford man accused in Portland convenience store robberies

A Biddeford man is accused of robbing a two Portland convenience stores Wednesday night.

Portland police say 29-year-old John Wedge has been arrested in connection with robberies at the Maine Smoke Shop on Washington Avenue and the Scrub-A-Dub car wash on Forest Avenue.

Police say in both cases, he threatened the clerk and demanded money.

The clerk at the smoke shop refused to hand over the money and was allegedly assaulted by the suspect.

A statewide alert was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody by Biddeford police just after 1 a.m. Thursday.

Wedge is charged with robbery in both cases and was being held at the Cumberland County Jail Thursday morning.
