Maine Senator Angus King will remain in the U.S. Senate after all.

The transition team for President-elect Joe Biden previously confirmed that the Independent senator was under consideration for director of national intelligence.

Instead, it was announced Monday that the former Vice President chose Avril Haines for the position.

King said Haines is a “smart, experienced” professional.

Haines, who still needs to be confirmed, would be the first woman to serve in the position. She was a national security adviser to President Obama and has served as the deputy director of the CIA.
