Annual vehicle inspections in Maine aren’t going away any time soon.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the Maine Legislature’s Transportation Committee shot down a series of bills on Wednesday that would have eliminated or changed the state’s vehicle safety inspection program.
The bills were heard by a committee during a public hearing last week.
Multiple attempts have been made to repeal the inspection mandate, but none have been approved.
The newspaper reports the inspection program raises about $3.5 million each year for the state’s highway fund. Opponents argue that there’s no evidence inspections contribute to making roads safer, and claim that it allows mechanics to charge for unnecessary repairs.
