The man who has led the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland for the past decade is retiring in May, according to reports.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Robert Deeley and has appointed the Rev. James Ruggieri as Bishop-Elect of Portland.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Deeley was appointed by Pope Francis in 2013 and was installed as bishop in 2014 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

The 77-year-old Deeley has faced criticism in connection with sexual abuse allegations again the Catholic Church.

A lawsuit filed last year alleged that Deeley and other high-ranking members of the church were negligent in allowing a Massachusetts high school administrator to sexually abuse minors a decade ago.
