The body of an 18-year-old swimmer was pulled from the Presumpscot River in Falmouth on Sunday night.

Around 4:30 p.m., Pedro Matala’s friends reported that he never resurfaced after diving in the water.

Maine Marine Patrol boats were part of the search. Divers and a helicopter were also involved.

CBS 13 reports that Matala’s body was recovered around 9 p.m.

Matala was going to be a senior at Deering High School in Portland, where he was a soccer player.  Friends and classmates mourned his death online saying he was always a kind and friendly face in the classroom and the hallways.

Police closed Allen Avenue extension between Pleasant Road and Fall Road while searchers looked for the missing swimmer.
