Classes will resume on Wednesday at schools in Fort Kent after the middle and high schools were shut down due to a bomb scare on Tuesday.

Fort Kent Police say the building was evacuated, and students and staff were taken to a designated safe zone after a handwritten note containing a bomb threat was found in a bathroom on campus.

Officers say a thorough search of the building found no threat, and classes were dismissed for the day after the school was determined to be safe.

Meanwhile, Fort Kent Elementary School carried out the rest of the school day in a soft lockdown because the threat was specific to the middle and high school.

The Maine State Police Bomb Team was also contacted and consulted during the threat.

The Fort Kent Police Department says it takes all threats to the public seriously and considers them all credible until determined otherwise.

Officers commended the Fort Kent Community High School faculty, staff, and students on the quick and orderly response when the decision was made to evacuate.

Police were initially called to the scene at Fort Kent Community High School/ Valley Rivers Middle School at 9:35 am Tuesday.
