The Wall Street Journal reporter arrested on espionage charges in Russia is a graduate of Bowdoin College.
Russia’s top security agency says that Evan Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg, about 900 miles east of Moscow.
He’s accused of stealing military secrets for the U.S. government, a charge that carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
The Wall Street Journal said it “vehemently denies the allegations,” and is seeking his immediate release.
The 2014 Bowdoin graduate is the first American reporter to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War.
In a statement, Bowdoin President Clayton Rose said the school community is “deeply concerned about Evan’s safety,” and they’re hoping for “a speedy resolution” to the situation.
