TOPSHAM, Maine (WGAN) A woman who was shot by a police officer in Topsham on Monday afternoon has died after suffering critical injuries.

Police say 37-year-old Kourtney Sherwood of Brunswick was shot near the Merrymeeting Bridge on Route 196 in Topsham around 3 p.m.

Police said Sherwood was making suicidal and homicidal statements, and they believed she was potentially armed.

A conversation between Sherwood and police reportedly turned into an armed confrontation, with Sherwood getting shot. She was taken to Maine Medical Center with critical injuries. The hospital said Tuesday she had succumbed to her injuries.

Topsham Police Officer Matthew Bowers was placed on paid administrative leave while the Attorney General’s Office investigates, which is standard procedure for all police-involved shootings.

No officers were injured.
