The State Fire Marshall’s Office says an explosive commonly used in target shooting ignited a large explosion in rural Stetson, northwest of Bangor, on Monday.

Investigators say residents on Coboro Road placed the explosive Tannerite inside an old camper located behind a house.

The Tannerite was detonated, causing the camper to explode, leading to a fire that threatened nearby woods.

The fire was extinguished before it spread.

Stetson Fire crews were assisted by crews from Levant, Carmel, and Etna Fire Departments. The Maine State Police and Maine Forest Rangers was also sent to the scene.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to investigate the cause of the explosion.
