Three Chinese nationals are accused of trying to scam an 82-year-old Alfred man out of $100,000.

The York County Sheriff’s Office says the victim was tricked into believing he received a payment in his bank account. The suspects allegedly told the man he had to pay the money back in cash.

The scammers received a $50,000 payment but were arrested when they tried to collect the remaining money Tuesday.

Deputies said all three speak limited English and have New York addresses.

They were charged with theft by deception and are being held on bail.

Two of the three were in the United States illegally.
