Citgo says it’s reducing emissions at its petroleum tanks in South Portland over concerns about potential health issues linked to the tanks.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that residents living near the tanks could face a higher risk of cancer and other health issues caused by exposure to the emissions.

State officials presented their findings to the city council on Tuesday.

Citgo announced Wednesday it was reducing emissions from the tanks and investing in local air monitoring for further study.

That as two state agencies are launching a one-year monitoring program to track the effects of the carcinogen known as benzene in South Portland neighborhoods.

The city council will host a workshop on Dec. 1 to discuss ways to mitigate toxic emissions.
