PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) The city of Portland has moved to extend it’s stay-at-home order until May 18th, as part of continued efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus.

This is in addition to Maine’s statewide stay-at-home order, which was initially set to expire on Thursday. Governor Janet Mills was expected to announce on Tuesday whether or not that order would be extended, but signaled earlier this week that it likely would be.

In a 5-4 vote on Monday night, Portland city councilors also voted to mandate that essential workers who interact with the public must wear face masks or face coverings. The mandate does not apply to customers. It goes into effect on April 30th.

After backlash from the city’s businessowners and residents, city councilors also approved allowing curbside pickup and shipping for non-essential businesses, as long as staff follow social distancing guidelines.

Councilors will meet again to make clarifications to the amendments if needed.
