PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) A forum was held Wednesday night to discuss the future of Fort Gorges.

Officials with the Portland Parks Conservancy say something needs to be done to preserve the national monument. According to our info partners at CBS 13 news, no formal proposal has been presented to the city, but there has been conversation of opening shops and a bed and breakfast at the fort.

A survey conducted by city officials showed most residents were opposed to a development plan to build a bed and breakfast, shops, and restaurants. Most did favor limited activities on the island that would help support it.

Officials will compile results of a survey from Wednesday night and the next steps will be decided by the city.
