Sixteen attorneys general are threatening legal action against Maine over a bill aimed at shielding medical providers for providing abortions and gender transition surgeries for children.

According to CBS 13 News, the group said it would vigorously challenge the proposal from Maine Rep. Anne Perry. The bill would shield medical providers from legal action taken by other states that don’t allow those procedures.

The group says the law, which would also shield medical records of patients seeking abortions in Maine, disregards states’ right to govern themselves.

Rep. Perry says Maine “needs to be a leader and defend our patients and providers.”
