UPDATE: The Coast Guard says the mayday call that was put out appears to have been a hoax. Crews have suspended the search pending further information. They said Thursday afternoon there were no indications of distress or missing persons in the area.

(AP) The Coast Guard says rescue crews are searching for three people off the Maine coast after a fishing vessel began taking on water.

A Coast Guard spokesperson says crews from Maine and Massachusetts responded to a mayday call placed Thursday at about 6:30 a.m.

The spokesperson says the Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol are searching for the three people in the water just south of Spruce Head, in Knox County.

The names of the people onboard and the circumstances that caused the boat to take on water were not immediately available.
