Collins Backs Both Spending Plans in Vote That Fails to End Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WGAN) Senator Susan Collins says she remains hopeful that both sides can work together to end an ongoing partial federal government shutdown, despite two proposals to end it getting rejected in the U.S. Senate on Thursday.

Collins took to the floor to speak after the vote, to reiterate that her priority is getting the government back open again and putting 800,000 federal workers back to work. She also spoke about the impact the shutdown is having on Americans who rely on federal agencies, like senior citizens.

The Republican senator voted in favor of both spending plans that were put to a vote on Thursday. One, backed by President Trump, would have provided border wall funding in exchange for temporary protections for Dreamers living in the United States. The Democrat’s plan would not have funded the wall, only ended the shutdown.

Neither bill got the required 60 votes.
