Commissioners in Oxford County pen letter to Gov. Mills asking for sheriff’s removal

Oxford County commissioners have confirmed that they intend to ask Governor Janet Mills to use her power to remove Sheriff Christopher Wainwright from his position.

Commissioners met Thursday to discuss the issue. Complaints against Wainwright include reports that he sold dozens of guns from the department’s evidence room without the knowledge of county officials, and outside the financial scrutiny of those officials.

The commission has no authority to suspend or fire Wainwright. Maine statute dictates that only the governor has that power.

Following Thursday’s executive session, commissioners said they plan to meet with the governor before holding a special meeting next Wednesday to finalize the wording of their request.
