AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A legislative committee has voted unanimously in support of Katherine McBrien to serve as state archivist.

McBrien, of Union, would be only the fourth person, and the first woman, to hold the position if she’s confirmed by the Senate.

“As Maine’s first female secretary of state, it’s an honor and privilege to nominate Maine’s first female state archivist,” said Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, to whom McBrien would report.

McBrien previously worked as chief curator at the Maine Historical Society and as curator of historic collections at the Maine State Museum.

As state archivist, she would be responsible for maintaining approximately 100 million pages of official state records.

The Committee on State and Local Government will send the recommendation to the Maine Senate for a vote.
