WARREN, Maine (AP) — The Maine Department of Corrections says the death of a prisoner at the Maine State Prison has been referred to state authorities.

The Corrections Department says 51-year-old Andrew Leighton died at 8:34 a.m. Monday at the Warren prison. The department says the State Police and medical examiner were notified, which is consistent with state policy.

The department did not release any other details about the circumstances of Leighton’s death. He began serving a 27-year sentence for murder in January 2015.

Leighton was convicted of the 2013 murder of his mother in Falmouth
