A 46-year-old Maine man serving a murder sentence at a state prison in New Jersey is dead after a reported encounter with corrections officers .

David Silva was convicted in Kennebec County more than 10 years ago and has had confrontations with corrections officers in the past.

It’s not clear why Silva was being held in New Jersey, although Maine law allows the transfer of prisoners to other states through an “interstate compact provision.”

The identities of the involved officers are not being released at this time, according to a release from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

Silva was being housed at the Northern State Prison in Newark.
