A member of the White House’s Coronavirus Task Force was in Maine on Tuesday.

Dr. Deborah Birx visited Southern Maine Community College to speak about the job colleges in Maine are doing to keep a lid on the virus’s spread, and what to expect going forward.

According to the school, Birx said said SMCC followed protocols to keep everyone safe while delivering education to students.

Birx urged everyone to continue to be vigilant even as the region continues to report relatively low coronavirus case numbers. According to the Portland Press Herald, Birx said colleges and universities can be “early warning systems” that can predict the spread of COVID-19 within a community.

So far, the SMCC campus has reported no cases.

The stop was part of the doctor’s nationwide tour of colleges and universities.
