Coronavirus hospitalizations are flat or falling in Maine, with the exception of Lewiston’s hospitals.

Both St. Mary’s and Central Maine Medical Center saw record inpatient numbers for the second week in a row this week, according to reporting in the Portland Press Herald.

The paper writes that Central Maine Medical Center cared for about 16 patients per day, up from 15.6 a week ago and 11.1 the previous week. At St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, staff there cared for 10.1 inpatients in the past week, breaking last week’s record of 7.4.

It’s not the first time the burden of care has shifted geographically. Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah says there may be a scientific explanation for the trends, but to allow for the possibility that they may be random.
