Cumberland County District Attorney Jackie Sartoris is taking issue with the Trump administration after a county jail corrections officer was recently taken into federal custody for overstaying his visa during an appearance on WGAN Morning News.
Sartoris says the administration is trying to reach a monthly quota for deportations after falling short on a campaign promise.
“What we’re doing right now is taking people who have legitimate asylum claims, who have registered with the government, who are endangered in their country of origin, and we’re saying, well, sorry, we’ve now changed our minds because of this 3000 quota,” Sartoris said. “We’re going to take all of your due process away.”
Immigration enforcement agents have recently been detaining people for overstaying their visas, even if they’ve otherwise properly followed federal requirements.
Sartoris says the former county jail corrections does not fit the Trump administration’s original stated plan to only target criminals for deportation and was closely scrutinized before being hired.
“This individual who was detained by ICE was duly screened and is someone with a background that the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office felt was more than appropriate,” said Sartoris. “You’re not talking about you know, your average bear when you’re hiring somebody to be a corrections officer.”
The corrections officer, Gratien Milandou-Wamba was fired for being absent, which only happened after he was taken into custody.
