SCARBOROUGH, Maine (WGAN)  The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam.

The sheriff’s office says residents in the Greater Portland/Scaroborough area have been getting calls from someone claiming to be with the department.

Police say on Monday, several people that work in Scarborough reported getting the call. Police say the person identifies himself as a Captain with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.  Police also say the name the perpetrator uses is a legitimate name of a Captain with the department.

The caller then claims the people they have contacted have missed federal jury duty and an “inactive” warrant is out for their arrest.  They then ask for payment by a gift card or to go to respond to the Cumberland County Jail.

Sheriff Kevin Joyce says the person responsible is taking the time to learn the names of local law enforcement and details about the victims to make their scam more credible.

Police say if you get one of these calls, hang up and call your local police department or the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center.
