Cumberland County is introducing tougher policies after recording the deadliest year for pedestrians in the county last year.

On Wednesday, Cumberland County District Attorney Jackie Sartoris said law enforcement agencies in the county will treat crashes resulting in injury that involve pedestrians or bicyclists as potential criminal or civil violations.

Going forward, police will have to refer reports on those crashes to the DA’s office.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine says that the state saw at least 23 pedestrian fatalities and five bicyclist fatalities in 2025.
