Students in Westbrook took to the streets after a black classmate was detained by police over the weekend.
According to the Portland Press Herald, dozens of middle and high school students walked out of class on Monday morning to bring attention to what they say is racial discrimination of students in school.
In a statement, Westbrook Police Chief Sean Lally said the detention of the juvenile had nothing to do with race. He said the boy was taken into custody because of fighting and criminal trespass during the Westbrook Together Days festival. Police said a crowd descended on the Westbrook Public Safety building and banged on windows, looking for ways to get inside.
Lally said no one was arrested, and the juvenile who was detained was released into the custody of his grandmother.
Westbrook Superintendent Peter Lancia said the peaceful protest can be an opportunity for dialogue with students and the community to discuss the issue of racial discrimination.
