Seniors living at an apartment complex in turner haven’t been able to drink water from the tap after health officials detected naturally occurring uranium in the well water.
Tenants at the Turner Square Apartments have been using bottled water for the last six weeks, because drinking the tap water could lead to kidney failure and dialysis.
According to CBS 13 News, residents only found out about the problem when they called the State of Maine Drinking Water Program. The residents initially thought the issue was radon or bacteria, but according to them, there’s been “no communication” with the property owner, leading to them calling in the state.
During the last quarterly test in late October, more than twice the safe level of uranium was found in the treatment system. For reference, the U.S’s recommended threshold is around 20 micrograms per liter. The state said this is all naturally occurring, and that the town office a mile away has the same issue.
The state says it’s working with a treatment company to repair the filtration system. But in the meantime, the residents of the apartment have had to resort to using multiple bottles of water for basic tasks such as cooking, making coffee, or brushing teeth.
